Components Cross References

The ARCAD-Observer tool is based on the ARCAD central repository which contains cross-reference and other information at different levels. The component or object level is the most used, and of course is the minimum level required.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

ARCAD-Observer is based on a central repository database that stores every link between components, even in a multi-platform configuration (see “multi-platform cross references” for more detail). There are numerous batch processes supplied that analyze your components and retrieve and record dependencies . For those of you that own a software package without source, the system still works, but with a slightly lower level of detail.

All relationships between programs, files, commands, menus, queries, etc., are cataloged. The information drills all the way down to the field level (databases, work fields, and input/output fields – see fields cross references for more detail). If you develop applications in an ILE environment, this information will be especially effective for you, since the system also identifies all cross-references between procedures ( see the related page). In addition, if you have implemented DB2/UDB standards and/or you develop in SQL, there are cross-references between fields, triggers and stored procedures.
