Test data sampling

By Amina Belhassena · July 1, 2026

Testing on full production copies is slow, expensive and risky. Testing on generic dummy data means missing the real-world cases that crash an application in production. Most teams swing between these two extremes and pay the price in both quality and time. DOT Extract resolves exactly this tension.

Key takeaways

  • 1

    DOT Extract generates targeted, lightweight datasets that reflect the real diversity of production data, instead of copying the entire database.

  • 2

    Relationships between tables and across sources are preserved, and can even be recreated virtually when the source database declares none.

  • 3

    Combined with DOT Anonymizer, DOT Extract secures non-production environments and helps meet GDPR, NIS 2, DORA, Law 25 and the FADP.

What is DOT Extract?

DOT Extract is a test data extraction solution that generates realistic, consistent datasets — small enough to support fast test cycles, yet large enough to faithfully reflect the variety of production data.

The principle: rather than copying the entire database, you intelligently sample a representative subset.

The solution is part of ARCAD Software's DOT suite, backed by 34 years of DevSecOps leadership, covering the full test data management lifecycle: discovery, extraction, masking and anonymization.

Why choose DOT Extract?

Smart sampling, not just a partial copy

Where many tools simply extract "everything or a percentage," DOT Extract delivers targeted, lightweight datasets that still capture the real diversity of the data.

Referential integrity preserved, even without existing relationships

Relationships between tables and across sources are maintained, ensuring consistent, usable data. And when the source database carries no declared relationships — a very common case on legacy systems — DOT Extract can create or import virtual relationships and run consistent sampling on that basis. You get reliable datasets, even where the database schema doesn't help.

Broad database coverage

DOT Extract integrates with DB2/z, DB2i, DB2 LUW, Oracle, SQL Server (including the Azure version), MySQL, PostgreSQL, Informix, MongoDB and MariaDB — from legacy mainframe environments to modern relational and NoSQL databases.

A fully integrated, end-to-end suite

DOT Extract pairs with DOT Anonymizer to extract and anonymize in a single pipeline. Everything starts from a copy of production, delivering realistic data without exposing the live database. From this multi-DBMS source, the system generates a targeted sample: small, but true to the real variety of the data. This sample can then optionally pass through DOT Anonymizer to mask sensitive data. The result is made available to non-production environments (UAT, development, business intelligence, training), which finally get relevant, consistent and compliant datasets — with zero risk to production (fig. 1).

Compliant and sovereign by design

DOT Extract helps you meet the requirements of GDPR, NIS 2, DORA, Law 25 and the Swiss FADP by reducing the exposure of sensitive data outside production.

ARCAD Software is a member of the Hexatrust alliance, with products listed by UGAP and DINUM, 100% designed and developed in France — a strong argument for public-sector organizations and regulated industries.

Tangible day-to-day benefits

DOT Extract gives your teams:

  • faster test cycles thanks to leaner datasets;

  • a better ability to reproduce production errors without using real files;

  • centralized, automatable management: integration into the CI/CD pipeline, centralized test data management, and automated scheduling of dataset deployment.
